Rough Steps

  • Sautee onions, bell peppers and minced garlic in oil over campfire.

  • Add in thin strips of steak and shredded cheese.

  • Toast up the rolls and scoop in the contents.

Detailed Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 lb thinly sliced steak (ribeye or sirloin work well)

  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, provolone, or your favorite melting cheese)

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 hoagie rolls, split

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Veggies:

    • Slice the onion, bell pepper, and mince the garlic.

  2. Cook the Vegetables:

    • Heat a bit of oil in a pan or wok over the campfire.

    • Add the sliced onions, bell peppers, and minced garlic. Stir occasionally, cooking for about 5-7 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized.

  3. Cook the Steak:

    • Add the thinly sliced steak to the pan with the vegetables. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

    • Stir the steak around for about 3-5 minutes, until cooked to your preferred level of doneness.

  4. Melt the Cheese:

    • Add the shredded cheese to the pan and stir until the cheese is fully melted, combining everything into a gooey, cheesy mixture.

  5. Toast the Rolls:

    • In a separate pan, melt butter over the campfire.

    • Place the split hoagie rolls in the pan, cut side down, and toast them until golden and crispy, about 2-3 minutes.

  6. Assemble the Sandwiches:

    • Once the rolls are toasted, spoon the cheesy steak and vegetable mixture onto the rolls and enjoy.
