Rough Steps

  1. Make dry bread flour at home (flour, yeast, salt, sugar) and pack in Ziploc bag.

  2. Add water to bag, mix around, and let it rise overnight in warm part of tent

  3. In the morning, fry dough on griddle with oil/butter. Goes great with Honey Butter

Detailed Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups bread flour

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon sug

  • 3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F/45°C)

  • Oil or butter (for frying)

  • 1/4 cup butter, softened

  • 2 tablespoons honey

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dry Ingredients:

    • At home, mix together the bread flour, yeast, salt, and sugar in a bowl.

    • Pack the dry ingredients into a Ziploc bag, sealing it tightly. This will be your "camping bread mix."

  2. Prepare the Dough (at camp):

    • When you’re ready to make the bread, pour the dry ingredients into a clean Ziploc bag or bowl.

    • Add 3/4 cup of warm water to the bag, seal it, and knead the bag to mix the water and ingredients. Continue kneading until the dough starts to come together and is sticky.

    • Leave the bag in a warm part of your tent or campsite overnight to let the dough rise. The yeast will activate and the dough should double in size by morning.

  3. Fry the Bread:

    • In the morning, heat a griddle or large pan over your campfire. Add a little oil or butter to the pan.

    • Once the pan is hot, pinch off small portions of the dough and flatten them into discs.

    • Fry the dough on the griddle for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.

  4. Make the Honey Butter:

    • While the bread is frying, mix the softened butter with honey in a small bowl until smooth and combined.
